Vitra Akari 50EN Pendant Lamp

In 1951, Isamu Noguchi started to create a series of lamps. Hand crafted from traditional Japanese washi paper, the Akari Light Sculptures filter light to create a softer illumination. Akari, meaning light and brightness in Japanese, are designed to bring the warmth of the sun into the evenings and dull days.

Isamu Noguchi was born in 1904 in Los Angeles and studied at Columbia University and the Leonardo da Vinci Art School. He subsequently established his first independent studio and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1927. In addition, he studied brush drawing and clay pottery to broaden his expertise and diversify his career.

His experiences living and working in different cultural circles are reflected in Isamu Noguchi's work as an artist. He is considered a universal talent with a creative oeuvre that went beyond sculpture to encompass stage sets, furniture, lighting, interiors as well as outdoor plazas and gardens.
