George Nelson Bubble Cigar Pendant Lamp

The translucent plastic shell of the Bubble Lamp series is wrapped around a lightweight steel structure to produce an elegant and minimalist pendant solution. Originally designed in 1947 to offer an affordable and innovative alternative to the popular silk pendants, it is available in multiple sizes and textures. The Bubble Lamp has stood the test of time and continues to offer a mid-century solution to todays vintage or contemporary interior settings. The pendant lamp comes with a brushed, nickel-plated steel, ceiling plate.

American-born George Nelson studied architecture and fine arts at Yale University. Starting his career as a writer in the field of architecture and design, he had the opportunity to study in Rome for a year. Upon his return, Nelson wrote about the pioneers of European design, including Mies Van Der Rohe and Le Corbusier, whom he had met on his travels and is largely credited with introducing their work to North America.

Whilst he had no experience in designing furniture, his insight into the best way to make furniture innovative and useful lead to his appointment as the Director of Design at Herman Miller. Under his directorship, Herman Miller manufactured some of the most iconic and recognisable designs of the 20th century, working with Ray and Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi to name a few. George Nelsons lasting legacy is that of a writer, designer, architect and a pioneer of mid-century design.
